What Experts Say
Diclofenac in Arthrotec belongs to the nonsteroidal anti inflammatory class, working by blocking cyclooxygenase enzymes that produce prostaglandins responsible for pain, swelling and inflammation in the joints. Misoprostol is added specifically to counter one major downside of long term NSAID use, its tendency to weaken the protective stomach lining.
By replacing prostaglandins that NSAIDs suppress in the stomach, misoprostol helps maintain mucus production and reduces the likelihood of ulcers forming during extended arthritis treatment. This combination approach is generally reserved for patients who need regular NSAID therapy and carry a higher than average risk of gastrointestinal complications.
The same prostaglandin effect that protects the stomach also stimulates uterine contractions, which is why this medicine is strictly avoided during pregnancy. Cardiovascular safety also deserves attention, since diclofenac carries a recognized risk of heart attack and stroke with prolonged use, especially in patients with existing heart disease or risk factors.
