What Experts Say
Azithromycin belongs to the azalide subclass of macrolide antibiotics. It works by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of susceptible bacteria and blocking the protein synthesis bacteria need to grow and multiply. This bacteriostatic action halts the spread of infection while the immune system clears the remaining bacteria.
Clinical studies over several decades confirm azithromycin's effectiveness against common respiratory, skin, and genital pathogens including Streptococcus species, Haemophilus influenzae, and Chlamydia trachomatis. Its long tissue half life allows shorter treatment courses than older macrolides like erythromycin, which supports better patient compliance and comparable cure rates.
Doctors in Pakistan often favor azithromycin for outpatient bacterial infections because it needs only three to five days of therapy and causes fewer stomach related side effects than erythromycin. Prescribers still weigh macrolide resistance patterns and any heart rhythm risk before starting treatment, since overuse can reduce future effectiveness.
