What Experts Say

Dermatologists reserve steroid-antibiotic combinations like Betacin-N for skin conditions where inflammation and infection occur together. Betamethasone is a potent corticosteroid that calms the immune response causing redness, itching and swelling, while neomycin is an antibiotic that targets bacteria commonly found in broken, weeping skin.

Physicians in Pakistan generally limit this combination to short courses, usually one to two weeks, since prolonged steroid use on the skin can cause thinning and a weakened local response to future infections. Neomycin also carries a recognized risk of contact allergy with repeated use, so doctors reassess the skin if it does not improve within the expected timeframe.

This ointment is prescription only because a doctor needs to confirm the skin condition genuinely involves infection before a steroid is applied over it. Using a steroid alone on an infected area can worsen the infection, which is why the combination formula is matched to a specific clinical picture rather than used as a general skin cream.
