  • Secondarily infected psoriasis patches, when directed by a doctor

  • Treats the bacterial infection and inflammation together in one product
  • Ointment base suits dry, thickened, or scaly skin patches

What Experts Say

Dermatologists prescribe this combination when skin inflammation and bacterial infection occur together, since treating only one half of the problem often leaves the other untreated. Betamethasone Valerate is a potent corticosteroid that calms swelling, redness, and itching, while Neomycin Sulphate targets the bacteria commonly found in infected eczema.

Physicians limit the treatment course because prolonged steroid use thins the skin and can mask a worsening infection instead of resolving it. Pakistan's hot, humid climate contributes to a high rate of infected eczema and heat related skin infections, keeping combination products like this in routine dermatology use.

Careful patient selection matters, since this combination is not suitable for viral rashes like chickenpox or fungal infections like ringworm, where a steroid alone can worsen the underlying cause. Doctors also avoid large raw or weeping areas, since Neomycin absorption through broken skin carries a small but real risk of hearing or kidney related side effects.

How to use Betaderm N Ointment 15gm?

  • Wash and dry the affected area gently before application.
  • Apply a thin layer of ointment to the affected skin, usually once or twice a day.
  • Rub in gently until the ointment is no longer visible.
  • Wash hands after applying unless the hands are the treated area.
  • Do not cover the treated area with an airtight bandage unless a doctor advises it.
  • Use only on the area a doctor has identified as infected and inflamed.
  • Avoid applying to the face, groin, or underarms unless specifically directed.
  • Do not use for longer than the prescribed duration, usually not beyond 7 to 14 days.

Drug Interactions

  • Other Topical Steroids: Avoid combining with another steroid cream or ointment on the same area, since this increases the risk of skin thinning.
  • Systemic Aminoglycosides: Using this ointment on large areas of broken skin alongside an injectable aminoglycoside antibiotic may add to the risk of hearing or kidney side effects, so inform the doctor of any other antibiotics in use.
  • Food: This ointment acts locally on the skin and has no established food interactions.

Risks and warnings

  • Skin Thinning: Prolonged or extensive use can thin the skin, cause stretch marks, or make blood vessels more visible, especially on the face and skin folds.
  • Not for Viral or Fungal Infections: Avoid use on cold sores, chickenpox, shingles, ringworm, or other viral or fungal skin conditions, since the steroid component can worsen these infections.
  • Neomycin Absorption Risk: Applying this ointment over large areas of broken or raw skin can allow enough Neomycin to absorb into the bloodstream, carrying a rare risk of hearing damage or kidney strain.
  • Not for Deep Wounds: Do not apply to deep cuts, ulcers, or extensively broken skin without direct medical advice.
  • Prolonged Use: Avoid continuous use beyond the prescribed period, since this raises the risk of both skin thinning and antibiotic resistance.
  • Children: Use in infants and young children only under medical supervision, since their skin absorbs topical steroids more readily.
  • Eye Contact: Avoid contact with the eyes, since it is not formulated for ophthalmic use.
