About Betoptic-S Eye Drop 0.25% 5ml
A beta blocker eye drop that lowers eye pressure in patients with glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Betoptic-S Eye Drop Uses
- Lowers elevated intraocular pressure in open angle glaucoma
- Reduces eye pressure in ocular hypertension
- Used as first line or add on therapy alongside other glaucoma drops
- Helps slow optic nerve damage caused by sustained high eye pressure
Betoptic-S Eye Drop Benefits
- Selective beta 1 blocking action limits systemic side effects compared with non selective beta blockers
- Twice daily dosing supports steady pressure control through the day
- Suspension formula stays on the eye surface longer for smoother absorption
- Widely prescribed by ophthalmologists across Pakistan for long term glaucoma management
What Experts Say
Ophthalmologists prescribe betaxolol because it reduces aqueous humor production without the sharp drop in heart rate seen with non selective beta blockers like timolol. This selectivity makes it a reasonable choice for glaucoma patients who also have mild asthma, though caution is still needed and doctors still monitor breathing closely during the first weeks of treatment.
Betaxolol is absorbed through the tear duct into the bloodstream, so doctors advise pressing a finger over the inner corner of the eye for about one minute after each drop. This technique, called punctal occlusion, lowers systemic absorption and reduces the chance of a slowed heart rate or fatigue, especially in older patients already taking heart medicines.
Long term glaucoma care often pairs betaxolol with a prostaglandin analogue when one drop alone does not control pressure well enough. Doctors also recommend regular visual field testing, since eye pressure readings alone do not always reflect optic nerve damage, and they warn against stopping the drop suddenly since this can trigger a rebound rise in pressure.

Drug Interactions
- Oral Beta Blockers: Combining with oral beta blockers such as atenolol or bisoprolol can increase the risk of a very slow heart rate.
- Calcium Channel Blockers: Using with verapamil or diltiazem may add to blood pressure lowering and heart rate slowing effects.
- Antiarrhythmic Drugs: Combining with drugs like amiodarone may increase the risk of conduction problems in the heart.
- Insulin And Oral Diabetes Medicines: May mask the warning signs of low blood sugar.
- Other Eye Pressure Medicines: Using alongside other antiglaucoma drops requires a five minute gap between each drop for proper absorption.
Risks and warnings
- Heart Conditions: Use with caution in patients with slow heart rate, heart block, or heart failure since betaxolol can be absorbed into the bloodstream.
- Breathing Problems: Use carefully in patients with asthma or chronic bronchitis, even though betaxolol is more eye selective than some other beta blockers.
- Diabetes: May mask signs of low blood sugar such as a fast heartbeat, so blood sugar should be monitored closely.
- Pregnancy And Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed and under a doctor's supervision.
- Contact Lenses: Remove soft contact lenses before instilling the drop and wait at least fifteen minutes before reinserting them.
- Sudden Discontinuation: Stopping the drop abruptly can cause a rebound rise in eye pressure, so any change should be supervised by a doctor.
