What Experts Say
Risedronate sodium belongs to a class of medicines called bisphosphonates. It works by binding tightly to bone tissue and slowing down the activity of cells called osteoclasts that break down old bone. This helps the body maintain bone density instead of losing it faster than new bone can form.
Bone loss speeds up after menopause because falling estrogen levels allow bone breakdown to outpace bone formation. Doctors in Pakistan often see osteoporosis diagnosed earlier than expected, partly linked to low vitamin D levels from limited sun exposure and diets that fall short on calcium and protein.
Long term use of bisphosphonates needs regular monitoring. Doctors typically recommend a bone density scan before starting treatment and periodic reviews afterward to check how well the medicine is working. Taking the tablet exactly as directed, on an empty stomach with plain water, makes a real difference to how well it is absorbed.
