What Experts Say
Psychiatrists across Pakistan usually start Risperidone at a low dose and increase it gradually over several days to reduce the risk of low blood pressure and excess sedation early in treatment. This titration approach is especially important in older patients and in those starting their first antipsychotic.
Doctors keep a close watch on weight, blood sugar and lipid levels during long term Risperidone use, since this drug class carries a real metabolic risk that can develop gradually over months of treatment. Regular monitoring lets a physician adjust the dose or switch medication before problems become serious.
Physicians generally prefer the lowest effective dose in children and adolescents treated for irritability linked to autism, since younger patients tend to be more sensitive to weight gain and hormonal side effects from this medicine. Dose changes in this age group are usually made more cautiously than in adults.
