What Experts Say
Calcipotriol is a synthetic vitamin D3 analogue that binds vitamin D receptors in skin cells. It slows the abnormal, rapid multiplication of keratinocytes seen in psoriasis and encourages normal skin cell maturation. Betamethasone Dipropionate is a potent corticosteroid that suppresses local inflammatory chemicals, easing redness, swelling and itching in psoriasis plaques.
Combining both actives in one ointment targets two separate disease mechanisms at once, excess skin cell growth and inflammation, which is why response tends to be faster than with either ingredient used alone. Calcipotriol also appears to blunt part of the skin thinning risk linked to steroid use, supporting a slightly longer treatment course than a corticosteroid used by itself.
Clinical guidance still limits continuous use to about four weeks because prolonged corticosteroid exposure can thin skin, and calcipotriol absorbed over large areas can raise blood calcium. This combination is not recommended for the face, groin or skin folds, and periodic review is advised for anyone treating more than a small body surface.
