What Experts Say
Diclofenac potassium is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that blocks the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2. This action lowers the production of prostaglandins, the chemical mediators responsible for pain, swelling, and fever throughout the body.
Clinicians often favor the potassium salt form over diclofenac sodium for acute pain because it dissolves faster and reaches peak plasma levels sooner after oral intake. This quicker absorption makes it a practical choice for conditions that need rapid relief, such as dental pain, migraine attacks, and postoperative discomfort after minor procedures.
Because diclofenac potassium suppresses prostaglandins throughout the body rather than only at the site of injury, prescribers generally recommend the lowest effective dose for the shortest possible duration. This approach helps balance pain control with the gastrointestinal and cardiovascular risks that are associated with long term NSAID use.
