What Experts Say
Paracetamol works mainly in the brain and spinal cord, where it lowers the body's fever set point and reduces the signals that cause pain. The exact way it blocks pain is still studied, but decades of use have given it a well-established safety record. Unlike many other painkillers, it does not significantly affect inflammation.
The intravenous form is used when a fast effect is needed or when a patient cannot swallow tablets safely because of surgery, nausea, or reduced consciousness. Hospitals rely on it after operations, during high fever, or when non-steroidal painkillers are not suitable due to stomach or kidney concerns.
Because paracetamol can affect the liver at high doses, the total daily amount from all sources, including tablets, syrups, and this infusion, is tracked carefully by hospital staff. Doctors calculate the dose by body weight, particularly in patients under 50 kilograms, to avoid accidental overdose with this concentrated form.
