What Experts Say
Ciprofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by blocking an enzyme bacteria need to copy their DNA, which stops them from multiplying and eventually kills them. In ear drop form, the medicine acts directly at the site of infection rather than moving through the whole body, which keeps the dose effective and the side effect profile low.
Doctors often prefer a topical antibiotic like this over an oral one for infections limited to the ear canal, since it reaches a much higher concentration right where the bacteria are. This targeted approach also reduces the chance of contributing to antibiotic resistance compared to using an oral antibiotic for a localized infection.
This plain ciprofloxacin formula does not contain a steroid, which some experts prefer when there is a perforated eardrum or when inflammation is mild and does not need extra steroid action. A full prescribed course, usually about a week, is important even if symptoms settle earlier, since stopping too soon can let the infection return.
