What Experts Say
Clotrimazole is an imidazole antifungal that damages the fungal cell membrane by blocking ergosterol synthesis, which stops the fungus from growing and spreading. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid that reduces the inflammation, redness and itching that often accompany fungal skin infections. Combining the two treats the infection and its symptoms at the same time.
This combination is generally used for a limited period, often two to four weeks, since prolonged steroid use on the skin can thin it or mask a worsening infection. Doctors typically recommend applying it twice daily and switching to a plain antifungal once the inflammation settles. Improvement in itching and redness is usually noticeable within a few days.
Long term or repeated use without medical guidance can lead to skin thinning, stretch marks and steroid dependent skin changes. It is not recommended for the face, groin folds or broken skin without a doctor's advice. Anyone with diabetes or a weakened immune system should have persistent fungal infections evaluated before self treating.
