Cortisporin Eye Ointment 3gm combines antibiotics and a steroid to treat bacterial eye infections with inflammation.

Cortisporin Eye Ointment 3gm Uses

  • Steroid responsive inflammatory eye conditions with bacterial infection risk
  • Bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible bacteria
  • Blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis
  • Corneal inflammation or injury with risk of bacterial infection
  • Post surgical eye inflammation needing infection control

Cortisporin Eye Ointment 3gm Benefits

  • Combines three antibiotics for broad bacterial coverage
  • Hydrocortisone reduces eye redness, swelling and discomfort
  • Thick ointment base keeps medicine in contact with the eye longer
  • Treats infection and inflammation together in one product

What Experts Say

Ophthalmologists prescribe combination antibiotic and corticosteroid ointments when bacterial infection and inflammation occur together in the eye. Neomycin, polymyxin B and bacitracin together cover a broad range of bacteria linked to conjunctivitis and blepharitis, while hydrocortisone calms the swelling and redness that infection triggers in the eyelid and conjunctiva.

Steroid use is only appropriate once bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, since corticosteroids can worsen viral, fungal or mycobacterial eye infections by suppressing the local immune response. This is why an eye examination by a doctor is needed before starting this ointment rather than self treating red or irritated eyes.

Prolonged corticosteroid use inside the eye raises intraocular pressure in some patients, increasing glaucoma and cataract risk over time. Doctors usually limit treatment to one to two weeks and recommend an eye pressure check if symptoms continue beyond the expected recovery period.

How to use Cortisporin Eye Ointment 3gm?

  • Wash hands before opening the tube
  • Tilt the head back and gently pull down the lower eyelid to form a small pocket
  • Apply a thin ribbon of ointment, about half an inch, inside the lower lid
  • Close the eye gently for one to two minutes to let the ointment spread
  • Avoid letting the tube tip touch the eye, eyelid or any surface
  • Wipe away excess ointment from the eyelid with a clean tissue
  • Wash hands again after application
  • Use at the frequency and duration your doctor prescribes, usually three to four times daily

Drug Interactions

  • Other Topical Ophthalmic Products: Using multiple eye drops or ointments together can dilute or wash out this ointment, so space other eye medicines at least ten minutes apart.
  • Other Corticosteroid Eye Products: Combining with another steroid eye medicine raises the risk of increased eye pressure and should be avoided unless a doctor directs it.
  • Other Aminoglycoside Antibiotics: Concurrent use with other neomycin family antibiotics increases the chance of local allergic sensitisation.
  • Contact Lens Wear: This ointment is not meant to be used while wearing contact lenses, so avoid combining with lens care products during treatment.

Risks and warnings

  • Fungal Or Viral Infection: This ointment must not be used for fungal, viral or mycobacterial eye infections since the steroid can worsen these conditions.
  • Raised Eye Pressure: Prolonged use can raise intraocular pressure and increase the risk of glaucoma or optic nerve damage.
  • Cataract Risk: Long term corticosteroid use in the eye is linked to posterior subcapsular cataract formation.
  • Neomycin Hypersensitivity: Some patients develop allergic skin or eye reactions to neomycin with repeated use.
  • Delayed Wound Healing: Steroids can slow corneal healing, so this ointment needs caution after eye injury or surgery.
  • Secondary Infection: Extended antibiotic use may allow resistant bacteria or fungi to overgrow in the eye.
  • Not For Long Term Use: Treatment beyond ten days needs an eye specialist review of eye pressure and healing.
