What Experts Say
Valsartan belongs to the angiotensin II receptor blocker class of medicines. It selectively blocks AT1 receptors, preventing angiotensin II from causing vasoconstriction and aldosterone release. This relaxes blood vessels and lowers vascular resistance, reducing blood pressure without affecting bradykinin metabolism directly.
Clinical trials in heart failure and post heart attack patients show valsartan reduces hospitalization rates and improves survival when added to standard therapy. Its kidney protective effect also helps diabetic patients with early kidney involvement by slowing protein loss in urine over time.
Compared with ACE inhibitors, valsartan carries a lower risk of dry cough since it does not raise bradykinin levels. Routine monitoring of kidney function, blood potassium, and blood pressure is still recommended, especially during the first weeks of treatment or after any dose change is made.
