What Experts Say
Valsartan belongs to the angiotensin II receptor blocker class. It blocks the AT1 receptor so blood vessels relax and blood pressure falls without the dry cough often seen with ACE inhibitors like enalapril or lisinopril. Cardiologists in Pakistan frequently switch patients to valsartan for exactly this reason, since a persistent cough remains one of the most common causes of ACE inhibitor discontinuation.
At the 320mg strength, this tablet is usually reserved for patients who need the maximum antihypertensive effect after lower doses like 80mg or 160mg failed to bring blood pressure to target. Doctors monitor kidney function and potassium levels closely at this dose, since ARBs can raise serum potassium and reduce kidney filtration in patients with existing kidney disease.
Pakistan carries a high burden of hypertension and related heart disease, driven by high dietary salt intake and low rates of routine blood pressure screening. Physicians recommend valsartan as part of a broader plan that includes salt restriction, weight control, and regular monitoring, rather than as a standalone fix for blood pressure.
