What Experts Say
Ceftriaxone blocks the enzymes bacteria use to build their cell wall, so the bacteria weaken and die as the drug circulates. Its third-generation structure lets it reach deeper tissues and cross into the fluid around the brain and spinal cord, which is why it remains a first-line choice for serious infections like meningitis.
A long half-life allows a single daily injection to keep effective drug levels in the blood for a full 24 hours, valuable for patients who cannot easily return for repeated doses. Doctors choose between intramuscular and intravenous routes depending on how quickly the infection needs to be controlled and where the patient is being treated.
Typhoid fever and severe bacterial infections remain common across Pakistan due to gaps in clean water access, and ceftriaxone is a mainstay hospital treatment for these cases. Doctors avoid mixing it with calcium containing fluids in newborns because of a rare but serious interaction. Liver and kidney function are checked in patients on longer courses to catch side effects early.
