What Experts Say
Ceftriaxone belongs to the third generation cephalosporin group of antibiotics. It works by stopping bacteria from building a proper cell wall, which causes the bacteria to weaken and die. This broad spectrum action makes it effective against many gram positive and gram negative organisms responsible for common hospital and community acquired infections.
Doctors often prefer ceftriaxone injection when a patient needs strong antibiotic cover quickly, especially in moderate to severe infections or when oral antibiotics have not worked. Its long half life allows once daily dosing in most cases, which reduces the number of injections needed during a treatment course and supports better adherence.
Like all antibiotics, ceftriaxone should only be used when a bacterial infection is confirmed or strongly suspected, since it has no effect on viral illness. Overuse or incomplete courses can contribute to antibiotic resistance, so the full prescribed duration should always be completed under medical supervision.
