What Experts Say
Dexlansoprazole is the R-enantiomer of lansoprazole and works by irreversibly binding to the hydrogen potassium ATPase pump in gastric parietal cells, blocking the final step of acid production. Dexiva Capsule 30mg uses a dual delayed release formulation, so the granules release the drug in two separate waves, once in the stomach and again later in the small intestine.
Gastroenterologists usually reserve the 30mg strength for patients who need reliable symptom control for gastroesophageal reflux disease, and for those stepping down after an 8 week course of erosive esophagitis treatment. Long term proton pump inhibitor use is monitored for effects on magnesium, vitamin B12, and bone density, especially when therapy continues beyond a year.
Acid reflux and functional dyspepsia are extremely common complaints in Pakistan, driven by spicy, oily diets, irregular meal timings, and high rates of untreated Helicobacter pylori infection. Doctors frequently prescribe dexlansoprazole when standard PPIs fail to control nighttime symptoms, since its extended release profile targets the early morning acid surge many patients experience.

Risks and warnings
- Kidney or liver disease: Use with caution and inform the doctor of any existing kidney or liver condition before starting
- Long term use: Extended use beyond a year may lower magnesium, vitamin B12, and bone density, so periodic monitoring is advised
- Fracture risk: Long term high dose use is linked with a higher risk of hip, wrist, and spine fractures
- Kidney inflammation: Rarely causes acute interstitial nephritis, which can occur at any point during treatment
- Masking of stomach cancer: Symptom relief may delay diagnosis of a more serious underlying condition, so persistent symptoms need medical review
