What Experts Say
Dexlansoprazole belongs to the proton pump inhibitor class and works by binding irreversibly to the hydrogen potassium ATPase enzyme in gastric parietal cells. This action blocks the final step of acid secretion, allowing gastric pH to rise and giving the esophageal lining time to heal from acid exposure.
What sets dexlansoprazole apart from older proton pump inhibitors is its dual delayed release formulation, which releases the drug in two separate pulses. This design extends the duration of acid suppression beyond a single dose of most other proton pump inhibitors, which explains its effectiveness against nighttime and unpredictable reflux episodes.
Clinicians generally view proton pump inhibitors as safe for short courses, but prolonged use needs periodic review. Extended therapy has been linked to reduced magnesium and vitamin B12 absorption, a modestly higher fracture risk, and an increased chance of gastrointestinal infections, so the lowest effective dose for the shortest necessary duration is recommended.
