What Experts Say
Furazolidone belongs to the nitrofuran group of antibacterials. It works by damaging the DNA inside susceptible bacteria and parasites, which stops them from multiplying and clears the infection from the gut lining.
Gastroenterologists usually reserve furazolidone for diarrhea that does not settle with oral fluids alone, or when stool tests point to a specific bacterial or parasitic cause such as Giardia. It has no effect on viruses, so it is not the right choice for common viral stomach upsets, and using it unnecessarily can encourage resistant bacteria to develop over time.
Doctors also note that this medicine should never be combined with alcohol, since the interaction can cause flushing, nausea and a rapid heartbeat. A short course of five to seven days is usually enough to clear most infections, and extending treatment without medical advice is not recommended, particularly in young children and pregnant women.

How to use Diarrazole Suspension 25mg/5ml?
- The bottle is shaken well before every dose to mix the suspension evenly.
- The prescribed dose is measured using the marked spoon or oral syringe that comes with the pack, not an ordinary kitchen spoon.
- Diarrazole Suspension is usually given three to four times a day for five to seven days, or as advised by the doctor.
- This medicine works best when given with or shortly after food, which can reduce stomach upset.
- Plenty of oral rehydration fluid alongside this suspension helps replace fluids and salts lost through diarrhea.
- The full course is usually completed even if symptoms improve within a day or two, unless a doctor advises otherwise.
- Alcohol and alcohol-containing syrups are best avoided during treatment and for a few days after finishing it.
Drug Interactions
- Alcohol: Combining alcohol with furazolidone can trigger a disulfiram-like reaction with flushing, palpitations and vomiting.
- Monoamine oxidase inhibitors: Furazolidone has mild MAO-inhibiting activity, and combining it with other MAOIs can raise blood pressure sharply.
- Tricyclic antidepressants: Concurrent use may increase the risk of high blood pressure and irregular heart rhythm.
- Sympathomimetic drugs: Decongestants and appetite suppressants can interact with furazolidone and raise blood pressure.
- Tyramine-containing foods: Aged cheese, cured meats and fermented soy products can cause a hypertensive reaction during extended use.
Risks and warnings
- Alcohol interaction: Furazolidone can cause a disulfiram-like reaction with alcohol, leading to flushing, nausea, vomiting and a fast heartbeat.
- G6PD deficiency: People with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency are at risk of hemolytic anemia with this medicine.
- Infants under one month: Furazolidone is not recommended in newborns due to a higher risk of red blood cell breakdown.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: This medicine should only be used in pregnancy or while breastfeeding if a doctor considers it clearly necessary.
- Tyramine-rich foods: Aged cheese, cured meats and fermented foods can interact with furazolidone during longer courses and raise blood pressure.
- Kidney or liver disease: Extra caution and dose review are needed in people with significant kidney or liver impairment.
