What Experts Say
Furazolidone is an antibacterial and antiprotozoal medicine that interferes with the enzymes bacteria and parasites need to survive. It has been used for decades to treat gut infections, particularly in regions where contaminated food and water make bacterial diarrhea common.
Doctors note that furazolidone also has mild monoamine oxidase inhibiting activity, so it can interact with certain foods and medicines. Patients are usually advised to avoid aged cheese, cured meats and alcohol during treatment, and to mention any antidepressant use before starting the tablet.
Experts caution that furazolidone should be avoided in infants under one month and in people with a known enzyme deficiency called G6PD, since it can trigger a breakdown of red blood cells. Anyone with unusual tiredness or dark urine during treatment should stop the tablet and consult a doctor promptly. Treatment courses are also kept short, usually five to seven days, to limit this risk further.
Drug Class
- Nitrofuran antibacterial and antiprotozoal agent
- Mild monoamine oxidase inhibitor (secondary property)
