What Experts Say
Doctors across Pakistan prescribe low dose enteric coated aspirin mainly for secondary prevention, meaning patients who already had a heart attack, stroke or stent placement. The enteric coating delays tablet breakdown until it reaches the intestine, which reduces direct stomach irritation compared to plain aspirin.
Physicians weigh bleeding risk carefully before starting long term therapy, since aspirin affects platelet function for the life of the platelet, roughly seven to ten days. Patients on other blood thinners or with a history of ulcers need closer monitoring and sometimes a stomach protecting medicine alongside treatment.
Clinicians generally avoid this class of medicine in children with viral infections because of the recognised link to Reye syndrome. Dosing is individualised around a patient's cardiovascular risk profile and kidney function, since aspirin is usually paused before any planned surgery.
