What Experts Say
Mefenamic acid suspension gives pediatricians a liquid NSAID option when a child needs pain or fever control beyond what paracetamol provides. Its fenamate mechanism blocks prostaglandin synthesis, which lowers fever and dulls pain signals at the site of inflammation, making it useful for short episodes of illness.
Weight-based dosing matters more in children than in adults because their body surface area, kidney function and drug clearance differ significantly from adult patients. Giving a fixed adult-style dose to a young child raises the risk of gastrointestinal irritation and kidney strain without adding any extra benefit.
Pediatricians usually restrict mefenamic acid suspension to short courses for confirmed fever or pain, and avoid it in infants under six months or in children who are dehydrated, since NSAIDs can reduce blood flow to the kidneys when fluid intake is already low.
