What Experts Say
Levofloxacin, the active ingredient in Dynaquin, belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by blocking bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, enzymes bacteria need to copy and repair their genetic material. This bactericidal action gives it activity against many gram negative and gram positive organisms that commonly cause respiratory and urinary tract infections.
The 250mg strength is generally used for milder infections such as uncomplicated urinary tract infections, or for patients needing a lower dose due to reduced kidney function. Experts stress completing the full course even after symptoms settle, since stopping early allows surviving bacteria to develop resistance.
Because fluoroquinolones carry recognized risks to tendons, nerves and heart rhythm, treatment guidelines reserve levofloxacin for cases where safer first line antibiotics are unsuitable, have already failed, or will not work against the identified organism. This risk based approach balances its strong antibacterial effect against its less common but serious side effects.
