How It Works

Attapulgite is not absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Instead, it acts entirely within the gut lumen. Its highly porous clay structure provides an enormous surface area that physically adsorbs bacteria, bacterial toxins, viruses, and other irritants present in the intestinal contents. By binding these substances, Attapulgite prevents them from interacting with the intestinal wall, reduces gut irritation, and slows the production of excess secretory fluid. The net result is firmer, less frequent stools and a reduction in abdominal cramping.

Adsorbent vs Absorbent

Attapulgite works by adsorption, not absorption. Adsorption means substances stick to the outer surface of the Attapulgite particles rather than being dissolved into them. This is clinically important because it means Attapulgite has a high capacity for binding multiple types of gut irritants simultaneously. It also means that Attapulgite can reduce the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time, which is why a gap of at least 2 hours between Entox-P and other medicines is strongly recommended.

Clinical Note

Attapulgite treats the symptoms of diarrhea but does not treat the underlying cause. In cases of diarrhea with fever, blood in the stool, or diarrhea lasting more than 2 days, a doctor should be consulted to identify and treat the root cause. Oral rehydration salts (ORS) should always be taken alongside Entox-P in acute diarrhea, particularly in children and elderly patients, to replace fluid and electrolytes lost through loose stools. Attapulgite alone does not restore hydration.

How to use Entox-P Tablet 630mg?

• Entox-P may be taken with or without food.
• The tablet should be swallowed with a full glass of water.
• Other medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or after Entox-P, as Attapulgite may reduce their absorption.
• Oral rehydration salts (ORS) should always be taken alongside Entox-P to replace fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhea.
• The standard adult dose is 2 tablets (1,260mg) after each loose bowel movement, not exceeding 12 tablets (7,560mg) in 24 hours. For children aged 6 to 12 years, 1 tablet after each loose stool, not exceeding 6 tablets per day.
• A doctor should be consulted if diarrhea does not improve within 2 days or if symptoms worsen at any point.

Drug Interactions

Attapulgite has no direct pharmacological drug interactions since it is not absorbed into the bloodstream. However, one important interaction applies to all adsorbent medicines:

• All orally administered medicines: Attapulgite can adsorb and reduce the absorption of any medicine taken at the same time. All other medicines must be taken at least 2 hours before or after Entox-P to ensure they are properly absorbed.
• Anticholinergic medicines such as benztropine, trihexyphenidyl, and dicyclomine: Concurrent use may reduce gut motility further, potentially worsening constipation if diarrhea resolves.
• Opiate pain medicines such as codeine and tramadol: These already slow gut motility. Combining with Attapulgite increases the risk of severe constipation once diarrhea resolves.

Risks and warnings

• Underlying cause: Entox-P relieves the symptoms of diarrhea but does not treat the underlying cause. Diarrhea with fever, blood in the stool, severe abdominal pain, or symptoms lasting more than 2 days must be evaluated by a doctor.
• Dehydration: Diarrhea, particularly in children and elderly patients, can cause rapid and dangerous dehydration. ORS must always be used alongside Entox-P. Entox-P does not replace lost fluids or electrolytes.
• Medicine absorption: Attapulgite significantly reduces the absorption of other medicines taken at the same time. A minimum 2-hour gap between Entox-P and any other medicine is mandatory.
• Constipation: Overuse of Entox-P beyond the recommended dose or duration can cause significant constipation. The medicine should be stopped as soon as stools become formed.
• Children: Entox-P should not be given to children under 6 years without medical supervision. In children aged 6 to 12 years, the dose is half the adult dose.
• Pregnancy: The safety of Attapulgite during pregnancy has not been fully established. A doctor should be consulted before use during pregnancy.
• Breastfeeding: Since Attapulgite is not absorbed systemically, it is generally considered low risk during breastfeeding. A doctor should still be consulted before use.

Entox-P Tablet Side Effects

Entox-P is generally well tolerated. Side effects are uncommon and mild when they occur.

• Constipation, the most common side effect, particularly if the tablet is taken for longer than needed or at higher than recommended doses.
• Nausea or mild stomach discomfort in some patients.
• Bloating or a feeling of fullness.

Serious side effects are rare. Medical attention should be sought immediately if any of the following occur:

• Signs of a severe allergic reaction including facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or widespread rash.
• Worsening diarrhea or diarrhea lasting more than 2 days despite treatment.
• Signs of severe dehydration including significantly reduced urination, dry mouth, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat.
