What Experts Say
Flucloxacillin is a narrow-spectrum, penicillinase-resistant penicillin that blocks bacterial cell wall synthesis, causing susceptible bacteria to rupture and die. Its resistance to the penicillinase enzyme means it stays effective against Staphylococcus aureus strains that would destroy plain penicillin. This makes it especially useful for skin infections common in warm, humid climates.
Absorption is more reliable on an empty stomach, which is why dosing is timed around meals rather than with them. Splitting doses evenly through the day keeps blood levels steady enough to stay ahead of bacterial growth between doses. Missing this spacing can let bacterial counts rebound, slowing recovery even if the total daily amount is correct.
A rare but serious liver injury linked to flucloxacillin can appear weeks after a course has ended, more often in older adults or after longer treatment. This delayed pattern is why unusual tiredness, dark urine or yellowing skin should prompt medical review even after finishing the medicine.
