What Experts Say
Levofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone group of antibiotics. It blocks bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which stops bacteria from copying their genetic material and multiplying.
Doctors reserve this tablet for infections that need broad coverage or for patients who cannot tolerate first line antibiotics, since fluoroquinolones carry a higher risk of tendon and nerve related side effects than many alternatives.
Respiratory infections and urinary tract infections are extremely common across Pakistan, particularly during the humid monsoon months and the winter smog season. Because antibiotic resistance is rising nationally, doctors increasingly reserve this class of antibiotic for cases that genuinely need it rather than for routine mild infections. Completing the full prescribed course, even after symptoms ease, helps limit the further spread of resistant bacteria.
