What Experts Say
Fluvoxamine Maleate belongs to the selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor class. It works by blocking the reabsorption of serotonin in the brain, which increases its availability at nerve synapses. This helps stabilize mood and reduce the intrusive thoughts seen in obsessive compulsive disorder.
Doctors in Pakistan often prescribe the 50mg strength as a starting dose before increasing it gradually. This lower dose allows the body to adjust to the medicine with fewer early side effects like nausea or drowsiness. It is also a common maintenance dose for people who respond well without needing higher amounts.
Fluvoxamine typically needs two to four weeks of regular use before full benefits appear. Doctors usually review response and side effects at each follow up visit before adjusting the dose further. Stopping suddenly is not advised, since tapering under medical supervision helps prevent withdrawal type symptoms.
