What Experts Say
Paracetamol works by blocking the production of prostaglandins in the brain, chemical messengers that trigger pain signals and raise body temperature during illness. This action explains why it lowers fever quickly while easing discomfort from headaches, sore throat, or body aches. Unlike NSAIDs, it does not significantly affect the stomach lining or blood clotting, which makes it a preferred first choice for children with fever or teething pain.
Clinical guidelines recommend weight based dosing rather than age alone, since children of the same age can vary widely in body weight. A dosing cup or oral syringe ensures accuracy, because household spoons often measure inconsistent volumes and raise the risk of underdosing or overdosing. Pediatricians generally advise spacing doses at least four hours apart and staying within the daily maximum.
The main safety concern with paracetamol is liver toxicity from repeated overdosing, particularly when a child receives doses from multiple products containing the same ingredient. Caregivers should check every medicine label for paracetamol content before combining treatments. When used correctly within recommended limits, paracetamol suspension remains one of the safest fever and pain options available for pediatric use.

- Anticonvulsants: Medicines like phenytoin and carbamazepine can increase the risk of liver toxicity when taken with paracetamol.
- Alcohol: Not relevant for pediatric use but avoid in older children or caregivers taking the same product, since it raises liver strain.
Risks and warnings
- Liver Toxicity: Overdose or repeated high doses can cause serious liver damage, especially when combined with other paracetamol containing products.
- Accidental Overdose: Using a household spoon instead of the provided dosing cup increases the risk of giving too much medicine.
- Liver Disease: Children with existing liver conditions need a doctor reviewed dose before use.
- Allergic Reaction: Rare cases of skin rash or swelling have been reported and require immediate medical attention.
