What Experts Say
Ibuprofen belongs to the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug class. It works by blocking the cyclooxygenase enzymes COX-1 and COX-2, which lowers the production of prostaglandins in the body. Prostaglandins trigger pain signals, fever, and swelling, so reducing their levels eases these symptoms effectively.
This mechanism makes ibuprofen suitable for short term relief of mild to moderate pain, fever, and inflammation from common conditions like headache, muscle strain, and minor injury. The suspension form allows flexible, weight based dosing, which is useful for children and for patients who cannot swallow tablets.
Clinicians generally limit ibuprofen use to the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration needed. Prolonged or high dose use can affect the stomach lining and kidney function, so it is avoided in infants under three months, during late pregnancy, and in people with certain kidney or heart conditions.
