What Experts Say

Iron sucrose is a form of iron bound to a sugar carrier that allows it to be given directly into a vein. Once infused, the iron is gradually released and taken up by the bone marrow to build new red blood cells and correct anemia.

Doctors reserve IV iron for people who cannot tolerate oral tablets, have ongoing blood loss, or have a gut condition that blocks iron absorption, such as inflammatory bowel disease. How to use Ferosoft-S Injection?

Drug Interactions

• Oral iron supplements: Taking oral iron at the same time as IV iron does not add benefit and should be avoided during the treatment course.
• ACE inhibitors: There is a slightly higher chance of allergic-type reactions in people taking ACE inhibitor blood pressure medicines.
• Other IV medicines: This injection should not be mixed with other drugs in the same syringe or infusion line.

Risks and warnings

• Allergic reaction: Serious allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis, can occur during or shortly after the infusion.
• Low blood pressure: A temporary drop in blood pressure can happen during administration.
