What Experts Say
Physicians reach for diclofenac when a patient needs stronger relief than paracetamol can provide, particularly for inflammatory joint pain, acute injuries and postsurgical discomfort. As a nonselective NSAID, it blocks both COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, which explains both its strong anti-inflammatory effect and its tendency to irritate the stomach lining.
Because gastrointestinal bleeding and cardiovascular risk both rise with dose and duration, doctors generally prescribe the lowest effective dose for the shortest period needed, and reassess if pain continues beyond a couple of weeks. Patients with a history of ulcers, heart disease or kidney impairment are monitored more closely or switched to a safer alternative.
Diclofenac remains one of the most widely prescribed pain relievers for musculoskeletal complaints because it is effective and affordable, but experts caution against combining it with other NSAIDs or taking it on an empty stomach. Patients on long term therapy for chronic arthritis are usually advised periodic blood pressure and kidney function checks.
