Fucidin H Cream Uses

Fucidin H cream is used for the treatment of a range of skin conditions like eczema, impetigo, and folliculitis, etc. Fucidin H cream has an active ingredient in the form of an antibiotic called fusidic acid, which inhibits bacterial growth and prevents infection by stopping the production of proteins that enable bacteria to flourish. Thus, it helps facilitate an effective immune response against any remaining pathogens for ultimate eradication. It also contains Hydrocortisone acetate, that helps reduce inflammation and itching. The cream is indicated for the treatment of primary and secondary skin infections caused by sensitive strains of Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus species, and Corynebacterium minutissimum.

Risks and warnings

You should know the risks and warnings of Fucidin H cream to prevent its misuse.

There are some specific circumstances under which the use of certain medications is contraindicated or considered dangerous. So if you are taking any medicine it's always a good practice to familiarize yourself with its risks and warnings.

The risks and warnings associated with Fucidin H cream are:

  • General

When treating severe or refractory skin lesions, supplementary administration of a systemic antibacterial agent should be considered. Although topical antibiotics may sometimes lead to non-susceptible organisms overgrowing or induce irritation or sensitization, discontinue in such situations.

  • Allergic to Fucidin H cream

Fucidin H cream can cause allergic responses in some people. It may result in an itchy rash and inflammation on the skin where the medication is applied. Additionally, irritation to the eyes or mucous membranes such as lips or genitalia could arise from this compound. Cetyl alcohol may elicit an itchy rash, with inflammation on your skin where your medication is administered.

  • Susceptibility/Resistance Development of Drug-Resistant Bacteria

The prescribing of Fucidin H cream without a proven or strongly suspected bacterial infection is unlikely to provide any benefit to the patient and may lead to undesirable resistance development.

  • Potential for Microbial Overgrowth

Bacterial resistance to Staphylococcus aureus is anticipated with prolonged use of topical Fucidin. All medications should be used carefully, especially antibiotics, and any further therapy must be limited to no more than 14 days at a time to minimize the risk of developing antibiotic resistance.

Due to the increased absorption of hydrocortisone, which is a corticosteroid, there might be the manifestation of hypercortisolism that happens in Cushing’s syndrome, and reversible hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis suppression. In case any of the symptoms are observed, reduce the frequency of Fucidin H cream’s absorption.

  • Visual Disturbances

Visual disturbances are observed with this cream, such as that seen in glaucoma and cataract.

  • In Children

In children, more absorption of this cream is observed, hence they are more susceptible to adverse effects of it. Long-term usage for children under 12 years of age should be avoided as it can cause adrenal suppression.

  • Viral Infections

This cream should not be used in case of any viral skin infection (for example: shingles, chicken pox, or bacterial lesion).

  • Circulation Problems

Patients who have problems with circulation shouldn't use this cream.
