Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that stops bacteria from copying their DNA. It works against many chest, urinary and skin bacteria. It does not work on viruses, so it will not help colds, flu or most coughs. Tablets are usually taken for 5 to 14 days depending on the infection.

Fluoroquinolones are reserved for infections where safer antibiotics are unsuitable or have failed. Tendon pain, nerve symptoms and mood changes can appear, even early in treatment. How to use Fylone tablet 500mg?

• Adults: 1 Fylone 500 mg tablet once daily for 5 to 14 days, as prescribed.
• Swallow with a full glass of water, with or without food.
• Take at least 2 hours before or after antacids, iron, zinc or calcium.
• Drink plenty of fluids and avoid strong sunlight during treatment.
• Complete the full course, and do not share leftover tablets.

Drug Interactions

• Antacids, iron, zinc and calcium: They reduce absorption, so space the doses by at least 2 hours.
• NSAIDs: They may raise the risk of seizures and nerve effects.
• Corticosteroids: Together they raise the risk of tendon rupture.
• Warfarin: Levofloxacin may increase the bleeding risk.
• Diabetes medicines: Blood sugar may drop too low or rise.
• QT prolonging medicines: Some antiarrhythmics, antipsychotics and antidepressants may raise heart rhythm risk.

Risks and warnings

• Tendon pain and rupture: Stop the medicine and rest if tendon pain or swelling occurs, especially with steroids or in older adults.
• Nerve and brain effects: Numbness, tingling, confusion or mood changes need urgent medical review.
