What Experts Say
Physicians recommend the HPV vaccine series ideally before the start of sexual activity, since immune response and antibody titres are strongest in early adolescence. Doctors across Pakistan note that catch-up vaccination remains valuable in young adults, though protection against already-acquired HPV strains is reduced.
The three-dose schedule is designed to build durable immune memory through repeated antigen exposure. Physicians monitor injection-site reactions closely in the first 15 minutes, since vasovagal syncope is more common in adolescent patients receiving intramuscular vaccines than in adults.
Doctors generally avoid administering the vaccine during acute febrile illness, deferring the dose until recovery, while mild upper respiratory infections do not usually require postponement. Physicians also counsel that vaccination does not replace routine cervical screening in later adulthood.

Drug Interactions
- Immunosuppressive Drugs: Medicines such as corticosteroids or chemotherapy can lower the vaccine's effectiveness by blunting the immune response.
- Other Vaccines: Can generally be given alongside other routine vaccines but at separate injection sites.
- Anticoagulants: Blood thinners like warfarin increase the risk of bleeding or bruising at the injection site.
- Blood Products: Recent immunoglobulin or blood transfusion may interfere with the vaccine's immune response.
Risks and warnings
- Fainting Risk: Adolescents may feel dizzy or faint after the injection, so patients are observed for 15 minutes post dose.
- Pregnancy: Vaccination is postponed during pregnancy, though inadvertent exposure has not shown clear harm in available data.
- Allergic Reaction: Anyone with a history of severe allergy to yeast or to a previous dose should avoid further doses.
- Immunocompromised Patients: Individuals with weakened immunity may have a reduced immune response and should discuss timing with their doctor.
- Bleeding Disorders: People on blood thinners or with clotting disorders need careful injection technique to limit bruising.
- Not a Treatment: The vaccine does not treat an existing HPV infection or cervical lesion, it only prevents future infection.
