What Experts Say
Doctors regard intranasal corticosteroids like Mometasone Furoate as the first line option for allergic rhinitis because the medicine works directly on the inflamed nasal tissue rather than the whole body. Physicians often prefer it over oral antihistamines when nasal blockage, not just sneezing, is the main complaint.
Pakistan carries a heavy burden of dust, pollen and pollution driven allergic rhinitis, and doctors frequently note that patients delay treatment until symptoms disrupt sleep or work. Experts recommend starting Hivate Nasal Spray 50mcg early in the allergy season and continuing it daily rather than using it only when symptoms flare, since steroid nasal sprays need a few days of regular use to reach full effect.
Physicians also stress correct spray technique, since pointing the nozzle away from the nasal septum reduces the risk of irritation and nosebleeds. For children and pregnant women, doctors recommend using the lowest effective dose under medical supervision, and monitoring growth in children who need it for extended periods.

Drug Interactions
- Ritonavir: This antiviral blocks the enzyme that breaks down Mometasone Furoate, raising the risk of systemic steroid side effects.
- Ketoconazole and Other CYP3A4 Inhibitors: Can increase Mometasone Furoate levels in the body when combined.
- Other Corticosteroids: Using multiple steroid medicines together, including inhalers or creams, raises the total steroid load on the body.
- Live Vaccines: High dose steroid nasal sprays may reduce the effectiveness of live vaccines.
Risks and warnings
- Nasal Irritation: A burning or dry sensation inside the nose is common, especially in the first week.
- Nosebleeds: Spraying directly onto the nasal septum increases the risk of bleeding.
- Growth Monitoring in Children: Long term steroid nasal spray use in children should be monitored by a pediatrician.
- Eye Pressure: Rarely raises pressure inside the eye, so caution is needed in patients with glaucoma or cataracts.
- Delayed Wound Healing: Avoid use after recent nasal surgery or injury until fully healed.
- Weakened Immunity: Use cautiously with an active nasal or sinus infection, tuberculosis, or immunosuppression.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Use only if a doctor confirms it is clearly needed.
