What Experts Say
Physicians favor ceftriaxone for empiric treatment of serious infections because its broad spectrum activity covers many common gram positive and gram negative organisms before culture results are available. Its long half life allows a single daily dose, which supports treatment adherence in both hospital and outpatient settings.
Pakistan continues to see a high burden of typhoid fever, including strains resistant to older first line antibiotics, which has made ceftriaxone a preferred option for confirmed or suspected enteric fever. Doctors typically reserve it for infections that are moderate to severe, leaving oral agents for milder illness.
Because ceftriaxone is only given by injection, doctors monitor for injection site reactions and rare but serious allergic responses, particularly in patients with a known penicillin allergy. Blood tests may be checked periodically during longer courses to watch kidney and liver function.
