What Experts Say
Sodium hyaluronate works by drawing and retaining water molecules at the ocular surface, forming a viscoelastic film that mimics the mucin and aqueous layers of natural tear fluid. Its high molecular weight lets it cling to the cornea longer than simple saline, explaining the extended comfort after instillation.
Physicians recommend preservative-free formulations for patients using lubricant drops more than four times daily, since repeated preservative exposure like benzalkonium chloride can itself damage the corneal epithelium over time. Dosing is titrated to symptom severity rather than a fixed schedule, with more frequent use during flare-ups from dry, dusty air or prolonged screen exposure.
Monitoring focuses on symptom response rather than lab markers, though patients with autoimmune dry eye or post-surgical corneal healing are reviewed more closely. Pakistan carries a high burden of environmental dry eye linked to dust, heat and pollution, making sustained lubrication a practical first-line step before escalating to anti-inflammatory drops.

- Use consistently through the day rather than only when symptoms feel severe
Drug Interactions
- Other Topical Eye Drops: Applying multiple eye drops too close together can dilute or wash out the previous dose, so spacing of several minutes is advised.
- Preserved Ophthalmic Solutions: Combining with preservative-containing drops can offset the gentleness of this preservative-free formula.
- Contact Lens Solutions: Using lens care solutions immediately before or after this drop can affect how the lubricant spreads across the lens surface.
- Eye Ointments: If an ointment is also prescribed, this drop should be applied first, followed by the ointment last in the routine.
Risks and warnings
- Preservative-Free Handling: Once opened, the bottle should be used within the manufacturer's stated period to avoid contamination risk.
- Contact Lens Use: Lenses should be removed before application and reinserted only after the drop has settled.
- Persistent Symptoms: If dryness, redness or pain does not improve within a few days, an eye specialist should be consulted.
- Eye Infections: The drop should not be used if there are signs of active eye infection without medical advice.
- Bottle Tip Contamination: Touching the dropper tip to the eye or any surface can introduce bacteria into the solution.
- Vision Changes: Temporary blurring can occur immediately after application and driving should be delayed until vision clears.
- Allergic Reaction: Rare hypersensitivity to sodium hyaluronate can cause increased redness or swelling, requiring discontinuation.
- Storage Sensitivity: Exposure to heat or direct sunlight can degrade the solution and reduce its effectiveness.
