What Experts Say
Domperidone works by blocking dopamine receptors in the stomach and upper gut, which increases the strength of stomach muscle contractions and helps move food through the digestive system faster. It also acts on the part of the brain that triggers nausea and vomiting, without crossing into the brain in significant amounts.
Experts advise using the lowest effective dose for the shortest time needed, generally not more than one week without medical review, because higher doses have been linked to a small increased risk of heart rhythm problems. This risk is higher in people over sixty or those already taking heart affecting medicines.
Taking the tablet fifteen to thirty minutes before meals gives the best results for digestion related symptoms. Specialists recommend seeking medical advice if nausea continues beyond a few days, since ongoing symptoms may point to an underlying condition needing separate treatment.
