What Experts Say
Diclofenac potassium belongs to a group of medicines called nonsteroidal anti inflammatory drugs, or NSAIDs. It works by blocking enzymes called cyclooxygenase, which lowers the production of prostaglandins, the chemical messengers responsible for pain, swelling, and fever throughout the body.
Because it is formulated as a potassium salt rather than the sodium form, it tends to dissolve and get absorbed into the bloodstream faster, which is why it is often chosen for acute pain rather than routine long term daily use. Doctors generally recommend taking it with food or milk to reduce stomach irritation.
Like other medicines in the NSAID class, this drug carries a recognized risk of stomach irritation and added strain on the heart and blood vessels, especially at high doses or over prolonged courses. For this reason it is usually prescribed at the lowest effective dose for the shortest period needed to control symptoms.
