About Lamictal Tablet 100mg
Lamictal Tablet 100mg contains Lamotrigine, an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy and bipolar disorder.
Lamictal Tablet Uses
- Treating partial onset seizures in adults and children with epilepsy
- Treating generalized seizures linked to Lennox-Gastaut syndrome
- Add-on therapy alongside other anticonvulsants when a single drug does not fully control seizures
- Long term maintenance treatment of bipolar I disorder to delay mood episodes
Lamictal Tablet Benefits
- Provides effective long term seizure control for many patients with epilepsy
- Lengthens the time between depressive and manic episodes in bipolar I disorder
- Carries a lower risk of significant weight gain compared to some other mood stabilizers
- Works well as an add-on option when seizures are not fully controlled on one anticonvulsant
What Experts Say
Lamotrigine works mainly by blocking voltage gated sodium channels in neurons. This stabilizes overactive nerve membranes and reduces release of glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter linked to seizure activity and mood instability. This dual action explains why the same molecule controls seizures and also helps stabilize mood in bipolar disorder.
Doctors always start Lamictal at a low dose and raise it gradually over several weeks. This slow titration exists because rapid dose increases sharply raise the risk of serious skin reactions, including Stevens Johnson syndrome. Patients taking valproate alongside Lamictal need an even slower, lower dose schedule, since valproate roughly doubles Lamotrigine blood levels.
In epilepsy, Lamotrigine offers broad spectrum activity across seizure types, with a favorable cognitive and metabolic profile compared to some older anticonvulsants. In bipolar disorder, it is used mainly for long term maintenance to delay depressive or manic episodes rather than treat an acute episode. Close clinical review during early titration helps catch any rash early.

How to use Lamictal Tablet 100mg?
- Take Lamictal exactly as prescribed by your doctor, at the same time each day
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water, with or without food
- Follow the exact titration schedule your doctor sets when starting or increasing the dose
- Never raise your dose faster than instructed, even if seizures continue
- Do not stop taking Lamictal suddenly, since abrupt discontinuation can trigger rebound seizures
- Take a missed dose as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for the next one
- Report any new skin rash to your doctor right away, especially in the first two months or after a dose increase
Drug Interactions
- Valproic Acid (Valproate): Significantly raises Lamotrigine blood levels, roughly doubling them, and requires a much slower titration schedule and lower maintenance dose to reduce serious rash risk.
- Carbamazepine: Speeds up Lamotrigine breakdown in the liver, lowering its blood levels and often requiring a higher Lamotrigine dose to maintain seizure control.
- Phenytoin: Also lowers Lamotrigine blood levels through liver enzyme induction, similar to carbamazepine, and may need dose adjustment.
- Phenobarbital and Primidone: These enzyme inducing anticonvulsants can reduce Lamotrigine levels and effectiveness if doses are not adjusted.
- Hormonal Contraceptives: Estrogen containing birth control pills can lower Lamotrigine blood levels during active pill days, and levels can rise during the pill free week, affecting both seizure control and contraceptive reliability.
- Rifampicin: This antibiotic induces liver enzymes and can reduce Lamotrigine blood levels.
- Other CNS Depressants: Combining Lamictal with alcohol, sedatives, or other drugs that cause drowsiness can intensify dizziness and sedation.
Risks and warnings
- Serious Skin Reactions: Lamotrigine carries a genuine risk of severe rash, including Stevens Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, especially in the first eight weeks of treatment or when the dose is raised too quickly.
- Abrupt Discontinuation: Stopping Lamictal suddenly can cause rebound seizures or status epilepticus in people with epilepsy. Any dose reduction or stop must be supervised by a doctor.
- Suicidal Thoughts: Like other anticonvulsants, Lamotrigine can rarely increase suicidal thoughts or behavior. Report mood changes, hopelessness, or self harm thoughts to a doctor right away.
- Aseptic Meningitis: A small number of patients develop fever, headache, neck stiffness, and confusion from drug induced aseptic meningitis, which resolves after stopping the medicine under medical supervision.
- Blood Cell Effects: Lamotrigine can rarely affect blood cell counts, so unusual bruising, bleeding, or infection should be reported promptly.
- Pregnancy Use: Lamictal is used cautiously in pregnancy since uncontrolled epilepsy itself carries risk, but dose and monitoring must be individualized by a specialist.
