What Experts Say
Neurologists prescribe lamotrigine because it stabilizes overactive sodium channels in the brain. This slows down the abnormal electrical signals that cause seizures. Doctors usually start patients on a low dose and raise it gradually over several weeks to lower the risk of skin reactions.
Psychiatrists also value lamotrigine for bipolar disorder because it helps delay the return of depressive episodes more than manic ones. Unlike some older mood stabilizers, it rarely causes weight gain or sedation. Regular blood tests are not usually required, which makes long term use more convenient for patients.
Experts caution that lamotrigine interacts significantly with hormonal birth control and valproate, so dose adjustments are often needed. Patients are advised never to stop the medicine suddenly, since this can trigger rebound seizures. Any new rash within the first two months should be reported to a doctor right away.
