What Experts Say
Levofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by blocking two bacterial enzymes called DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV. Bacteria need these enzymes to copy their genetic material and multiply. Without them, the bacterial cells die off and the infection gradually clears.
Clinical guidelines position levofloxacin as a second line option for many respiratory, urinary and skin infections. Doctors usually reserve it for cases where narrower spectrum antibiotics are unsuitable, have failed, or resistance is suspected. A full course, typically five to fourteen days, should be completed even when symptoms improve within the first few days of treatment.
Levofloxacin carries safety concerns that set fluoroquinolones apart from ordinary antibiotics. Regulators have flagged possible tendon damage, nerve problems and heart rhythm changes linked to this drug class. Because of this, most physicians reserve levofloxacin for infections that genuinely need its strength rather than using it as a first choice.
