What Experts Say
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic. It blocks two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their genetic material. This stops bacterial growth and kills susceptible organisms. Its long half life allows once daily dosing, which improves adherence in outpatient treatment.
Doctors usually reserve levofloxacin for infections where first line antibiotics have failed or are unsuitable. It penetrates lung and urinary tissue well, making it useful for pneumonia and complicated urinary infections. Culture testing is recommended where possible, since fluoroquinolone resistance is rising in some bacteria.
Fluoroquinolones carry warnings for tendon rupture, nerve effects and heart rhythm changes, so experts use caution in older adults and those on steroids. Blood sugar shifts can occur, which matters for diabetics. Staying hydrated and avoiding excess sun exposure during treatment helps reduce side effects.
