What Experts Say
Levofloxacin belongs to the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics. It works by blocking two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy their genetic material. Without these enzymes, bacteria cannot multiply and are cleared by the immune system.
Doctors usually reserve fluoroquinolones like levofloxacin for infections that have not responded to first line antibiotics or where resistance is confirmed. This cautious approach helps slow down antibiotic resistance, a growing concern given frequent self medication and incomplete courses. Levofloxacin should only be taken on a doctor's prescription for the exact duration advised.
Levofloxacin can affect tendons, nerves and heart rhythm in some patients, so doctors monitor older adults, people with kidney disease and those on steroids more closely. Anyone who develops joint pain, tingling or an irregular heartbeat during treatment should contact their doctor right away.

- Mental health effects: May trigger anxiety, confusion, agitation or hallucinations, particularly in older adults.
- Myasthenia gravis: Can worsen muscle weakness and cause serious breathing difficulty in people with this condition.
