What Experts Say
Levofloxacin is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic that blocks two bacterial enzymes, DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which bacteria need to copy and repair their genetic material. Blocking these enzymes stops bacteria from multiplying and kills them, making it bactericidal. It covers many gram positive and gram negative organisms.
Fluoroquinolones like levofloxacin are usually reserved for infections where narrower first line antibiotics are not suitable, due to a wider side effect profile. It remains a common choice for pneumonia, complicated urinary infections and certain skin infections when sensitivity testing supports its use. Doctors weigh its once daily dosing against tendon and nerve safety warnings.
Because of its known risks, treatment is kept to the shortest effective course, and patients are told to report any new joint or nerve symptoms right away. Older adults, people on steroids and those with kidney impairment need closer monitoring. Finishing the full course, even after symptoms improve, helps prevent relapse and resistance.
