What Experts Say
Physicians commonly reserve fluoroquinolones like Levofloxacin for infections where first line antibiotics have failed or resistance is suspected, since overuse can accelerate resistance patterns that are already common. Dosing is adjusted for kidney function, with reduced doses given to patients who have impaired renal clearance.
Doctors monitor patients on Levofloxacin for tendon pain, especially those over 60 or taking corticosteroids, since this drug class carries a recognized risk of tendinitis and, rarely, tendon rupture. Blood glucose is also checked in diabetic patients, since fluoroquinolones can disturb glucose regulation in either direction.
Physicians recommend completing the full prescribed course even after symptoms improve, since stopping early is a major driver of relapse and resistant bacterial strains. Cardiac history is reviewed before starting therapy, because Levofloxacin can prolong the QT interval in susceptible patients.
