What Experts Say
Montelukast works by blocking leukotriene receptors in the airway lining, which lowers the inflammation and narrowing that trigger asthma symptoms. Physicians in Pakistan frequently prescribe it as an add on to an inhaled corticosteroid rather than as a standalone rescue treatment, since it does not act quickly enough to relieve a sudden attack.
The once daily dosing schedule reflects montelukast's long half life, which allows steady leukotriene blockade with a single evening tablet. Even when asthma symptoms feel controlled, doctors recommend periodic review of lung function and inhaler technique, since montelukast is a preventive drug and not a substitute for quick relief medication during an acute flare.
Prescribers also monitor for neuropsychiatric effects such as sleep disturbance, vivid dreams, irritability or low mood after starting montelukast, since regulatory agencies have flagged these reactions in a subset of patients. Reporting any new mood or behavior change promptly allows the treating physician to adjust therapy if needed.
