Drug Interactions
- Antipsychotic medicines: Combined use increases the risk of serious movement disorders and should be avoided
- Levodopa and Parkinson's medicines: Metomide syrup reduces their effectiveness by blocking dopamine
- Sedatives, sleeping pills, and opioid pain medicines: Combined use increases drowsiness and central nervous system depression
- Antidepressants: Certain antidepressants may increase the risk of abnormal movements when taken with Metomide syrup
- Cyclosporine (an immunosuppressant medicine): Metomide syrup may raise cyclosporine levels in the blood, increasing its effects and risks
- Digoxin (a heart medicine): Faster stomach emptying caused by Metomide syrup may reduce digoxin absorption
- Anticholinergic medicines: These medicines reduce the effectiveness of Metomide syrup in speeding up gut movement
Risks and warnings
- Tardive dyskinesia risk: Long-term use beyond 12 weeks raises the risk of this irreversible movement disorder, so the shortest effective course is always preferred
- Neuroleptic malignant syndrome: This rare but life-threatening reaction can cause high fever, rigid muscles, and confusion; stop the medicine immediately and seek emergency care if these signs appear
- Depression and suicidal thoughts: Metomide syrup may cause or worsen depression in some patients; any sudden change in mood or behavior must be reported to a doctor right away
- Epilepsy or seizure history: This medicine lowers the seizure threshold, making fits more likely in patients with a known seizure condition
- Parkinson's disease: Metamidate syrup can significantly worsen Parkinson's symptoms by blocking dopamine; it should be avoided in these patients
- High blood pressure: This medicine may raise blood pressure in certain patients; regular monitoring is advised during treatment
- Pregnancy: Metomide syrup is used during pregnancy only when clearly necessary and after a careful discussion of risks with the doctor
- Breastfeeding: This medicine passes into breast milk; a doctor's advice is needed before use during breastfeeding
- Elderly patients: Older patients are at higher risk of tardive dyskinesia and excessive sedation; lower doses and regular review are recommended
- Kidney or liver problems: Patients with reduced kidney or liver function need a lower dose as the medicine clears more slowly from the body
- Driving and machinery: Metomide syrup can cause drowsiness and dizziness; avoid driving or operating heavy equipment until the effect on alertness is known
