What Experts Say
Dermatologists consider adapalene a first line topical retinoid for comedonal and mild inflammatory acne. It selectively binds retinoic acid receptors inside the follicle and normalizes keratinocyte turnover. This reduces the plugging that leads to blackheads and whiteheads and lowers the environment Cutibacterium acnes needs to thrive.
Compared with older retinoids, adapalene gel is more photostable and more resistant to breakdown when paired with benzoyl peroxide. Many prescribers recommend applying it at night while using a benzoyl peroxide wash in the morning for combined coverage against comedonal and inflammatory acne. Improvement is gradual, most patients need eight to twelve weeks of steady nightly use before visible results appear, and an early purging phase where acne looks temporarily worse is common and expected.
Over the long term, adapalene is valued for a comparatively milder irritation profile than tretinoin, which helps patients with sensitive or acne prone skin tolerate months of maintenance therapy. Regular follow up is still advised to monitor sun sensitivity, dryness, and any conflict with other exfoliating products used in the same skincare routine.
